I have found that the easiest way to keep an eye on what the deer are up to is to put the trail camera on the gate. On this night there were five deer in and out all night. First in, at just before 9pm, was a group of three, two does and a young buck.
followed another minute later by another doe. This one was very aware of the glow from the camera.
Two does and the young buck left at 22.30 but returned just after 03.00.
One doe left a couple of minutes later, pausing for a nibble of ivy.
The older buck followed her
The last three left just before 04.00. Here is one of the does
And here is the young buck, showing his first set of antlers.
This is the largest number of deer I have seen in the garden. It is interesting that the group size (presumably mostly family) is so variable, anything from one to five. I presume that the young buck will have to leave soon to make his way in the world.
