Northern Brown Argus

Bishop Middleham Quarry in County Durham is home to the Northern Brown Argus, which is found in only a few places in the North of England.  Aricia artaxerxes ssp. salmacis is similar to, but distinct from, the Brown Argus (Aricia agestis) found elsewhere in England.  Unlike some butterflies it is happy to sit still for a photo.

The amount of orange colouring on the forewing is quite variable.

Also present were some female Common Blue butterflies which are superficially similar.
