Ugly baby

Only its mother could love it.  This fledgling wood pigeon was sat on the gate when I arrived home and didn't seem to know what to do next, sitting patiently while I got a camera out of the boot to take its photo.  It was weak flyer and even worse at landing so would have been an easy catch for the female sparrowhawk, had she been around.

Because their young are fed on crop milk from the parents in the nest, wood pigeons have a very long breeding season, so this may not be the last of the fledglings.
