Another oddity in the garden. I think this chap has been in a fight - probably with another woodpecker - and ended up with some of his feathers rearranged and a few missing. I expect they will grow back but until then he looks a bit of a devil.
13 December 2018. Update. My sister Cherry has suggested this bird might be the one I saw taken by a sparrowhawk a few days before and which I suspected might have escaped. It's a good idea and the timeline and location fit well. I think an adult woodpecker (weight 80g) would put up a good fight against a juvenile male sparrowhawk (150g).
