I had read that hornets like bananas but didn't quite appreciate how much. We put out a mixture of mashed bananas and maple syrup in the warden's garden where they have been hunting and it didn't take them long to find it. The big advantage from my point of view is that they stand relatively still so it is easier to get a good look at them.
I put the second lot of banana on a piece of bark to avoid the plastic dish in the background.
I am hoping that when they emerge the new males and queens will like bananas as well.
