There are at least two bitterns in Gosforth Park nature reserve at the moment. They normally keep a low profile but this one climbed to the top of the reeds when a mink entered the reed bed. I was ready when it took off but still only managed to get one flight shot in focus.
The next time I went the bittern was in deep shade at the edge of a reed bed. I also managed a couple of pictures almost in focus as it flew off.
