A solitary wasp

The weather has been so cold and miserable that I was surprised to see an insect at all, but this one had the right idea and was sheltering in the greenhouse.  It is a solitary wasp of some kind, and lays its eggs in a hole in a tree or a wall or in the ground, leaving food such as caterpillars for its larvae to eat.  There are several thousand species of wasp in this country and many of them look a bit like this, small and black and yellow.  I haven't tried to work out which species this is, as it is often impossible, but its name doesn't really matter much.  Up close it is a marvellous little beast.
