First hawker

I haven't seen a hawker up here yet this year but I did see this young male southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea) in my mother's garden in Northamptonshire last weekend.  It was preparing to spend the night sheltering in a bush.  Despite its name we do see southern hawkers up here in the north.  (Correction.  It is a rare blue form female.  See Alan's comments below.)

  1. Interesting Chris, what you've got there is an immature female showing blue colouration. Not sure if the colour changes when mature but is an unusual form, nice find.
