To mark the occasion, here are some of my Newcastle magpies this week. Although they are usually thought of as black and white birds (hence the nickname for the team), in the right light they have metallic blue wings and green/purple tails.

The Magpies' new season
Newcastle United, aka the Magpies, escaped relegation from the Premier League on the very last day of the season last time. The new manager has identified just two problems - they let in too many goals and don't score enough of their own! Let's hope they have a more successful time in the new season which starts today (their first game is tomorrow).
