This is a female golden-ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii), Britain's longest dragonfly. Along with seeing an adder and a green hairstreak butterfly, finding one of these was on my hit list of things to do in 2016. They are not common in the North East but I found this one in Martindale in Cumbria.
Now all I need now is to find a male - perhaps on 2017's list of things to do.
A wonderful thing to behold!
